Karjala Cup: Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech Rep.

So the first big international tournament of the year begins. The host Finland is probably the favorite, but Sweden will put in a good showing. The team is wholly drawn from Europe since it is nearly impossible to get NHLers to leave during the season. Five players are coming from the Swiss league, aside from that the rest of the players are playing in the Swedish Elitserien.

Players to watch are Johan Backlund who is playing brilliantly. He has pushed Timrå to the top spot in the Elitserien with his consistent good play. He hasn't been flashy, just in the right position when the puck is shot at him and he keeps rebounds under control, a solid goalie. Tony Mårtensson is also worth watching, he plays well internationally and is an underrated player. Jonathan Hedström is playing well as well and he should be a threat to score as well as a play maker. And of course the veteran Jörgen Jönssön is back and his leadership is always on display.

Unfortunately no Mika Hannula or Niklas Bäckström. Bäckström leads the league in points right now and he will be missed but he has a long season at home and lots of responsibility so perhaps it is wise he rest instead. Still, count on Sweden to be tough in this tournament.
